About Quail
And Some Quail Hunting Tips
Quail is actually a name for several types mid-sized birds, mainly in the pheasant family As a result, there are many types of quail in the "quail family."
Quail are small, plump, and land-oriented birds.. Quail feed, mainly, on seed, but will also eat insects, and the occasional similar small type of prey. Quail are ground nesters, but easily tale flight in short and rapid bursts. There are some species of quail that are migratory and able to fly long distances. Quail may be farmed in large numbers. For example, Japanese Quail is raised mainly to produce eggs.
Quail hunting is quite a sport! Its actually nown as: "The Sport of Aristocracy." Quail are rarely found in wetland areas. In the Southern and Western United States, Quail are found in areas with a combination of both open land and woody cover.
Although quail hunts are in the fall, I find the best time for hunting is NOT early in the season, as that's when the birds are young. Remember: When the quail season gets underway, they quickly adapt and change their routine
Obviously, you'll need a good bird dog! Even if you don't bag alot of quail, the dog work, itself, is worth the fun of the sport! Dogs actually compete with each other to see who can be first to spot a covey of quail. When a dog located his quarry, he'll freeze "on point." Its very impressive.
Due to the nature of the sport, as in ALL hunting, you MUST exercise safety! Now, many types of hunting require camouflaged gear, quail hunting, however, is different and requiress extreme visibility. Its a MAJOR issue! That's because of the closeness of hunters to each other, as well as the flight pattern of the rather unpredictable quail. I can't stress enough, that it is extremely ESSENTIAL that each quail hunter be able to SEE each other at ALL times!
